Moving on to new and better things
A Leap of Faith or more

It has been more than a decade since I have joined SP. Too long and perhaps longer than I should have stayed.

It is time to move on to new things, to grow personally and professionally and learn more about the world.

As such, I have left full-time employment with SP and started my own tuition centre in Yishun.

It had not been easy but it was the right thing to do. As the saying goes, the right thing to do is usually the hardest.

Essentially, iMatter Learning Centre was born. It provides tuition and enrichment programmes for students in Yishun in primary, secondary and JC levels. Subjects include English, Math, A Math, Science, Chinese, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and General Paper.

We emphasise on small class teaching and personalised learning in a relaxed atmosphere. If you want your child to improve in his school grades, talk to us to see how we can help your child. Contact us to find out about our fees and schedules or sign up for our programmes.

Monday, June 16, 2008 . My current interest

Dear folks,

I am currently doing research and evaluation work in water quality in Singapore. Activities include water quality monitoring and sampling in the natural areas of Singapore. I am starting to write a blog on these activities, viewable at this address:

waterqualityinsingapore.blogspot.com

Meanwhile, I will still check up on the chatbox in this blog but most of latest stuff will be in the above blog.

Thursday, July 26, 2007 . DO you know about this?

Though our core activity is training our students for work in the chemical industry, we also engage in numerous other activities in support of industry and to position SP as a valuable industrial partner.

Short Courses
Whether you want to upgrade the knowledge of your employees or impart greater awareness in your students, we are likely to have something for you. We regularly conduct customised short courses for our clients. Besides delivering classroom based theory lessons, we provide hands-on sessions in our well-equipped laboratories. Short courses last from a few hours to a full semester of 2 – 3 classes a week..

A small sample of our clients and courses…
· Schools Chemistry for everyday living (Meridien JC, Hwa Chong Institution), Chemistry – an experimental science (Raffles Institution) etc.Ministry of Education teachers Experimental and experiential chemistry, Protecting the environment through chemistry and life sciences, Chemistry and drugs, Environmental chemistry etc.
· Industry Basic process technician course (Pfizer)
· Third parties collaborating with us - Certificate of competence in water treatment (COCWT) (Tick 3), COC in sewerage and wastewater treatment (Tick 3), Foundation certificate in biomedical science (MDIS)

Consultancy & Testing
We also help to
· Explore or develop a certain product or process when a company lacks the manpower, time, expertise or other resources to do so.
· Perform analytical testing when a company lacks the equipment or trained personnel.

Examples of consultancy work I have done are Water softener design (NUS), Chemical additives in instant ice compress (JLCC Industries) and Development of novel skin wipes (Freshening Industries).

Facilities
· Multimedia classrooms and lecture theatres for conducting short courses
· Well equipped laboratories for R&D work in general, environmental, organic, instrumental, analytical and electrochemistry

Industrial training programme (ITP)
Every year, our second year CPT students are attached to our industrial partners for training. Why not take this opportunity to engage our students to help out in your operations or even allow our students to cover your staff who need to go on leave? Our ITP normally lasts from February to April. ITP allowances to our students are extremely reasonable.

Recruitment of laboratory officers
We have a huge alumni of graduates trained in CPT. If you need laboratory officers or technicians in your company, why not drop us a note? We can put the word out for you through our grapevine and you will be able to get the right candidates without sifting through piles of irrelevant resumes.

Friday, February 02, 2007 . Path to a centralised economy - Technology Innovation Centres (TICs)

TICs are the latest development in campus. The idea is simple. They are the coordinators for all consultancy work coming to SP. All requests go through them and they farm out the actual work to the relevant staff in the TICs or the academic schools. Something like a middleman. So what is the added value? They are supposed to market SP as the preferred consultant, as well as to be the point-man if something goes wrong. Sounds good? And the Archilles heel? Staff will not be getting any consultancy fee. We have now become part of the consultancy machine or consultancy has now become part of our job. Anyway, the devil is in the details so we just have to wait and see how it can be implemented.

Wednesday, January 10, 2007 . Upgrading of SP's Computers

Starting from 26 Feb 2007, all computers in lecture halls and classrooms will be permanently removed. Lecturers and students who wish to do presentations will have to bring along their notebooks to class. Of course, this should not sound too surprising since SP has started to equip all staff with notebooks and all new students in 07-08 will have to own a notebook each.

So what's next? Will SP go completely wireless since the wireless coverage in campus is rather good? After all, wireless security has improved tremendously the past few years. As mentioned in an earlier posting, e-learning will become more dominant in the coming years. Now we have terms like "mobile e-learning, vodcasting, podcasting, blended learning, learner-centred active learning" coming up in pedagogical lingo. All these will certainly incorporate elements of e-learning. Only time will tell to what extent e-learning is being used.

Thursday, November 09, 2006 . E-learning

For those of you who think that e-learning is boring, there is more on the way. Starting from 2007/2008, all first year students will have to own a portable computing device, meaning a notebook or tablet. This probably means that SALC and other computer rooms will slowly be phased out. Right now, staff are urged to start thinking of ways to make use of such a development. For example, how should the curriculum be adjusted to allow students to do decentralised learning?

In fact, by 2010, ALL modules need to have at least 20% of the syllabus under decentralised learning. Officially, decentralised learning means the class can be split into small groups at different locations on campus for the same time slot while the lecturer facilitates in one location. Sounds vague? It sure does.

Anyway, e-learning is here to stay and it can only become more prevalent in the future.

Wednesday, August 23, 2006 . Stress management 2

The 3 parts of the brain - front, mid, hind. The front part takes care of the logical/analytical stuff. That's what makes humans "smart", meaning animals either lack this part or have rather undeveloped front brains. The mid-brain is more primitive. The human mid-brain is essentially similar to most mammals. It has colourful names like dog brain, the puppy, lizard brain, reptilian brain etc. It handles fear and some basic emotions e.g. anger. The hind brain is for autonomic nervous functions e.g. respiration, digestion that you don't control consciously (the only exceptions you can force yourself to control are breathing and blinking).

The problem arises when our stress levels go way high, leading to fear and anger. (Btw, these point the way to the Dark Side of the Force.) The puppy now becomes so dominant that it hijacks your front brain, making you lose your rational thought. This is of course why you can't reason with an angry or frightened person. Solution - calm the person down before talking sense into him. Oh yes, at the same time you lose your rational thought, you are going to lose your fine and possibly complex motor skills. Talking, writing, messaging on a handphone become impossible. Have you ever been so stressed in an exam that you can't think straight and worse still, can't even hold your pen.

Fortunately, one solution is to BREATHE, as in breathe in on 4 counts, hold on 4 counts, breathe out on 4 counts, hold on 4 counts and repeat the cycle. This may not work with everyone in every situation but it sure beats sitting there stoned. Remember, breathing is one of the autonomic nervous functions you can control so it acts as a bridge between your autonomic nervous system and your somatic nervous system (which controls your fine motor skills). Hence, it works as it does.

My Projects

I can't seem to think of a better title. Anyway, "My Projects" provide that important sense of ownership one needs to complete those projects. The list is naturally not complete. There are lots of other things too mundane to include. Since the intention of this blog is work-related, there will be no mention of personal and family stuff :-) Who says we only teach and mark papers?!?

1. Submission of WITs (Work Improvement Teams) project report and presentation of the project at a later time

2. Setting up a new module on environmental chemistry for the brand new Diploma in Environmental Management and Water Technology

3. Revamping my current environmnetal module to include new and exciting stuff in Green Chemistry

4. Filing a patent. Of course, details are confidential.

5. Publish a couple of environmental books. This idea is really only in the embryonic stage. Still have lots of homework to do.

Sounds incredibly challenging? You bet.

Friday, August 18, 2006 . Stress management

Ok, here's a quick writeup.

I am currently reading a book and one of the interesting things mention relates to stress, its causes and effects from a psychological and physiological viewpoint. Here are some of the more intriguing points.

How does one overcome stress?

1. Stress inoculation
In other words, get used to stress. Experience it often, ideally in situations of little consequence. You don't be caught off-guard when the big one comes.

2. Autopilot
Practise, practise and practise. The ultimate aim is to perform that task without conscious thought, even under stress.

3. Physical training
Yes, if you are in good physical shape, you are likely to handle stress better. I believe people have always known this to be true.

All right, time to sign out here. More on this topic in the next post... the different coloured conditions, as well as the 3 parts of the brain.

Interior design of a lab is not simple stuff as seen in this layout plan. Lots of things have to be factored in e.g. dimensions, placement of equipment, ergonomics (benches must be at least 1.5m apart). This plan is of course not final. Guess it is only final when the lab has actually been built.

Phase 2B of new CLS building

For those of you still in the dark, there will be a phase 2B to the moving of CLS over to a location closer to where all the "action" is i.e. Dover MRT. And we are all so busily in the midst of planning for such a move in 3 years time. Yup, need to plan early for such a complicated activity.

For my part, I need to draw up the design for my lab (Environmental Chemistry) in the new building. It is certainly not as simple as it sounds. Floor plan has to be drawn to scale with all the furniture and equipment. This includes the sinks too! By the way, none of us are trained in architecture or interior design. We also need to draw the benches - show the cupboards and drawers as well. Find out the power of the exhaust fans, the type of power sockets to use, material of benchtops etc.

Oh, all these may be subject to change since the final dimensions of the lab is not confirmed. And... the floor space has actually decreased compared to my current lab.

Yup, all these are part of our job.

Wednesday, November 16, 2005 . More updates from SP

According to some sources, SP students will be required to purchase their own laptops in the near future. Prices will of course be lower than the outside market and financial will probably be available for those needy students. Are we trying to emulate the RP model where every student is intricately linked to the wireless campus network? Will e-learning become a permanent and more dominant part of studying in SP? Do students still have to attend lectures in the future? Or will tutorials become online video conference with a camera attached to every laptop? We just have to wait and see.

But imagine this - there will be no need for SALC and the many computer labs. This certainly provides an immense saving in space and manpower!

On a similar note, MM is starting to outsource its technical support officers. This means the technicians there are not employed by SP but by some external service provider. Will these external technicians be attached to SP for long? Will they be familiar with the equipment and procedures in SP to work effieiently? What exactly are their duties? Are they supposed to help the lecturers and students in their project work? Obviously this is an important test to determine how viable this idea is in SP. If successful, will this be extended to other schools like CLS?

Other departments that may be outsourced include Library, Finance, Estates, Computer Support and probably others. What will SP be like in 5 years, 10 years time? Are there still people working here? Unthinkable??? Maybe not...

Phase 2A of new CLS Building

News update of the new CLS Building. If anyone still hasn't heard about it, it is the one currently being constructed next to T12A which is next to Dover MRT. Yup, that's the one with lots of workers coming in the morning and leaving in the evening.

Apparently, it will be ready by the end of 2005 or early 2006. Biotech and biomed staff will be moving over together with the CLS Department office. Guess I won't be moving so soon... Hmmm, it may not be such a bad thing as the classrooms and some labs will still be located here in T1 and T2. Can you imagine the staff and students (biotech, biomed) moving to and fro between these not so near locations?

The last I heard, the rest of CLS will only move in 2 to 3 years time. Is this good or bad news? Let's wait and see what the first wave of people moving over have to say :P

SP E-learning Week 19-23 Dec 2005

I have just gone for a briefing on e-learning week in the coming semester. It appears that SP is also making inroads into this new trend of "e-learning".

Simply stated, the entire week of 19-23 Dec will be designated as e-learning week for the entire campus. Btw, this is just before the 1-week break. NO classes are allowed to be here, not even practical. Whatever lectures and tutorials are converted into online learning, probably on Blackboard. Perhaps, video and voice will accompany the normal PowerPoint files. Wow, isn't this exciting?

What about practical? Will they be converted too? At this point, there is no definite answer yet. Hmmm.... how do you do a practical online anyway?

Students are not allowed to meet their instructors during this week. For those students without PCs at home, they may return to campus to make use of its computer facilties.

Are all these developments good or bad? Will students actually make the effort to do online learning? Is e-learning effective in teaching certain concepts which require face-to-face interaction? Will this lead to more work for everybody? Will this be permanent or will the week be extended to a month or more?

Lots of questions and uncertainties... guess we will only find out when the e-learning week is upon us. Stay tuned for further developments!

Shinto Shrine Search 13 Aug 2005

Heard of the Japanese Shinto shrine built during the Japanese Occupation in Singapore? Heard of it but clueless about where it is? Or haven't even heard about it?

Buried in the dense jungle of the MacRitchie Catchment Area are the ruins of Syonan Jinja, a Japanese Shinto Shrine dating back to World War II. Built to commemorate Japanese soldiers who died fighting in the invasion of Singapore, Syonan Jinja was the location of many Japanese religious and cultural ceremonies. The original structure, built during the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), was a temple with no walls. Raised from the ground by a stone platform graduated with a few steps, the sloping temple roof rested on pillars that stood at regular intervals round the perimeter of the platform. It is believed that during rituals, worshippers would drink from a huge granite ceremonial fountain located outside the shrine.

A Shinto ceremony took place here every New Year's Day for the few years that the shrine existed. This was marked by the sounding of the temple bell, the arrival of devotees and the presence of a Shinto priest presiding over rituals. After the proceedings were completed here, the worshippers moved on for a second ceremony at Syonan Chureito, a war memorial for the Japanese soldiers, located at Bukit Batok.

Syonan Jinja was destroyed when the Japanese Occupation ended in 1945. Crumbling granite steps that once led to the shrine are visible, as well as the stone fountain. Of the temple building itself, there is a low stone wall that runs one length of the building and several square pits in the ground that probably once supported pillars.

Today, remnants of the shrine are covered by jungle vegetation. As it is no longer accessible, Syonan Jinja is best seen through old photographs and drawings by the Japanese military as well as the POWs who helped build the shrine.

Is it really inacessible? You can find out by joining us in this search.

Sunday trek to Treetop walk and Bt Timah Hill (26 Jun 2005)

Making another trip back to the treetop walk after half a year. This time, the turnout was amazingly large - 17 of us altogether. As expected, the place was crowded with weekend recreationists. In no time, you began to feel that you are in a mall with joggers, taichi practitioners, families with kids etc. Crashes were inevitable - literally.

Still, I am sure everyone in our group had a great time since we are cooped in the office for most of the week and don't often have a chance to take a breath of fresh forest air.

Update

There has not been any new entry in this blog for some time. No surprises here... my work committments are extraordinarily heavy the last few weeks. That is the irony - while most people were having their holidays, I and a few others have to return to work on some "glamorous administrative stuff"... hush... I will say no more. My schedule should be returning to normal now that most of the admin stuff has stabilised. Till next time.

Upcoming activity: Endau Rompin (Johor) Exploratory Trek

Endau Rompin Exploratory Trek - camp out in pristine and untouched REAL jungles for 3 nights and the best thing is you don't have to be an experienced individual as long as you have a good sense of humour, and open mind and a positive mental attitude!

This is not a PACKAGE TOUR! Everyone has to help out - planning the route, carrying equipment and supplies, cooking, looking out for one another etc. Group items e.g. tent, stove, lantern, food, mess tins will be shared among participants.

But for those of you keen to expand your outdoor skills or even to boost your jungle confidence, this trek will help you to do just that. It does not matter whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will surely discover more about yourself in this trek.
